More than 20 million UK mobile phone owners are over 50
New figures reveal that there are over 20 million mobile phone owners over the age of 50 in the UK.
Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, which provided the figures, says smartphone use among this demographic is based around "core" features, with 63 per cent browsing the internet, 57 per cent using email and 52 per cent downloading apps.
Social networking, instant messaging and video streaming are less popular areas. These older users also tend to play pre-loaded games, rather than downloading them.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, believes that increased usage by the over-50s proves that this demographic is now getting to grips with the internet.
"I think they're becoming far more accustomed to using the internet at home," he said.
"They're now getting to the stage where they want that same level of access on their mobile phone."
Earlier this year, Kantar revealed a milestone had been reached with more than half the population owning a smartphone for the first time.
